Military Hospitals in Urban Environment
Abstract
Relations that arise between a city and its inhabitants can be analyzed from different points of view. Within the framework of simple classifications, we can divide all objects into private (residential spaces) and public (offices, shopping centers, city parks), or desirable, located in the most privileged, central places (shops, squares, offices) and undesirable, distant from cities at considerable distances (cemeteries, hazardous industries). According to the first classification, a military hospital will be an unremarkable public building, and in the second most likely falls into the undesirable, located away from the bustle of the city and prying eyes. But can we say anything more about the location of an object in an urban environment and the degree of its inclusion in the urban environment? Using the example of a military hospital, we analyze its specific characteristics that explain the nature of this type of building and the history of its movements within urban areas.
