Towards a Global City

Abstract

This article is devoted to the development of Ulaanbaatar as a dynamic centre of Innermost Asia region. Its development is analyzed through the concept of a global city. Is the Mongolian capital a global city and if so, which part of the globe does it belong to? The research is based on the materials provided by the National Statistics Office of Mongolia (www.nso.mn), international development agencies, investment funds and the World Bank reports. These materials contain extensive data that characterize the involvement of the Mongolian capital in the global processes occurring in Asia. The author has also been conducting field research in Ulaanbaatar over the last decade and has had an opportunity to observe the development of the city.
